Commerce without Mathematics

After passing secondary education(10th class) most of the students get into the dilemma of whether or not to opt for Mathematics with Commerce subjects, where on the one hand their inner consciousness disagrees with the choice but on the other, the society norms of ‘no future in commerce without mathematics’ pressurises them and puts them in a conflict. Most of the students end up taking commerce with maths only because of the fear of being judged as unworthy. One thing each one of you needs to know is that, none of these judgments and norms matter once when you are through your eleventh and twelfth class and the only thing that matters is the career path chosen by you and how you are going to make the best of it.

Students who opt commerce without maths are those, who are either not comfortable playing with numbers or have strong disliking for the subject. And it is completely okay to go for the same if the absence of mathematics is not going to hinder your career choices. There are tons of careers one can choose which don’t require mathematics as a major subject and some of these are as follows:

 

 

  1. B.Com: Graduation degree in B.Com does not require mathematics to be one of the core subjects in eleventh and twelfth class. It is a three years long degree course which also offers specialisation like B.Com with IT, Computer Science, Banking and Finance, Banking and Insurance, Retail Management and Foreign Trade on undergraduate level.

           When further continued to master’s level one can opt for M.Com with same specialisation or 

           choose MBA to enter corporate world.

 

  1. BBA: BBA degree course of three years can also be pursued without mathematics with specialisations in Marketing, HR, Finance, Event Management, Travel and Tourism Management, Foreign Trade, Hotel and Hospitality etc. After this an MBA degree at Master’s level is popular among students.

 

  1. Law: To pursue law, students have to clear entrance exam CLAT (Common law entrance test ) where maths is not a mandatory subject . Commerce students can also opt for integrated course of B.Com LLB, BBA LLB, BA LLB and then can go for maters program like LLM.
     
  2. BA: Students from commerce stream can change their stream and switch to graduation in Arts with certain reduction of percentage (2 %to 5%) depending on the college one is applying to. There are specialisations in BA like English, History, Political Science, Geography etc.

 

  1. BMS: Bachelor of Management Studies is a three years degree course and has become the most sought career option after “commerce without maths”. This course offers wide job opportunities in corporate world after completing graduation itself. It equips students with principles of marketing and management of corporate world finance and working.
     
  2. Accountancy: With a keen interest in Accountancy as subject, a lot of career options open up after class 12th like CMA, CA ,CFA courses which offer respectable accounts related job opportunities. Most of the students prefer to prepare for such courses along with graduation as these are mostly correspondence courses and are slowly climbing the staircase of popularity and an assurance toward a stable career option.

 

  1. B.Des: Bachelor of Designing is a four year undergraduate degree course in the field of designing. It offers a platform to creative students who want to explore the creative job opportunities and offer various courses like Product Design, Textile Design, Fashion Design etc. where mathematics as a subject plays almost zero role.

 

  1. CS: CS course is for students out there who want to be working as a Company Secretary. This job profile is welcomed by MNCs and companies to fill the managerial post and can be perfectly pursued without mathematics.  
     
  2. BFT: Bachelors in Foreign Trade is the course for you if you are looking out to build career in foreign trade and is a three years program which will equip you with import, export, supply chain management techniques and method. Mathematics is not at all an eligibility criterion for this course.

 

  1. Travel and tourism: Three year degree course which can be done under various disciplines like BA in Travel and Tourism, BSc in Travel and Tourism and BBA in Travel and Tourism. With an interest in tourism sector without any interest in Mathematics works well to succeed in this field.
     
  2. Hotel management program, BHM: A three year job oriented course to which one can seek admission after twelfth without maths. Hotel Management and Hospitality is one of the most growing fields, to which one can jump into and explore wide range of opportunities. There are various courses available like Bachelors of Catering Management, BA in Culinary Arts, Bachelor of Food and Beverage production to which one can enrol.
     
  3. Journalism and mass communication: Three year degree course along with many branches that one can explore if somebody has genuine interest in this field. Some of the common ways of pursuing are either going for a BBA in Media Management or by opting B.Sc/BA in Journalism and Mass Communication.

 

  1. Diploma courses: Students looking for short term courses for skill development and exposure to hands- on working experience are recommended to go for diploma courses of one year to two year duration and offer handsome working opportunities after completion along with ensuring the learning of basic disciplines of course you have chosen.

        There are various diploma courses available out there out of which some are

  • Diploma in elementary education
  • Diploma in event management
  • Diploma in interior design
  • Diploma in fashion design
  • Diploma in music
  • Diploma in photography
  • Diploma in journalism
  •  Diploma in cooking and baking

 

Diploma course are known to enhance the creativity of a person along with knowledge of their fields and being market ready. Interest or skill set is the criterion and not Mathematics.

All these courses can be opted by students from commerce Stream without maths as a subject and hence prove that not taking Mathematics will not affect the availability of career opportunities. Having said so, it must be noted that students who are aiming to get admission to B.Com Honours or Economics Honours should have maths as additional subject or core.

Also having maths in eleventh class as additional subject can help one to clear various connective exams like SSC, CPT, ACET, CAT, or bank exams as it helps to clear the aptitude section.

Mathematics should be chosen out of genuine interest or in case your future aim requires maths as basic eligibility criteria, and not because of any pressure from the parents or society. Ample career options are available for both the category of students.
