This competition celebrates and highlights the benefits of combining art and science. The terms and conditions of the BioArtAttack (2D) 2023 competition are available. This 2023 competition is a new drawing and painting competition for children aged 7-18 years old to draw or paint their favourite animal, plant or fungi. The Nancy Rothwell Prize is now a sub-category for specimen drawings entered into this competition.
Eligibility
The competition is free to enter and is open to Royal Society of Biology members and nonmembers from around the world. Entrants must not be professional artists. For the purposes of this competition, a professional artist will be considered to be someone who makes more than half their annual income from the sale of their drawings.
Prizes
There are three age categories (7-11, 12-14, and 15-18) and prizes are awarded for:
- A winner (£50 for the student) to be awarded to a young person from anywhere in the World
- A UK based winner (£50 for the student) to be awarded to enable this competition to recognise the artwork of children living in the UK
- A highly commended runner up (£20 for the student) to be awarded to a young person from anywhere in the World
- A winner of the new Nancy Rothwell Prize 2023 (£50 for the student) to be awarded as a specific named specimen drawing prize (The Nancy Rothwell Prize 2023) to recognise specimen drawing in schools and to highlight the benefits of combining art and science
- Winners and highly commended entries will be announced on the Royal Society of Biology website in October 2023.
How to Register
- Each entrant can submit only one drawing or painting into the competition.
- The organisers encourage entrants to enter scans of their drawing or painting rather than photographs.
- Entrants should keep hold of their original drawing or painting as this may be requested at a later date.
- Images should be submitted as a high resolution JPEG file Photographs and poor quality scans will not be accepted. Each entrant may only submit one image to the competition.
- There are no restrictions on the type of drawing, painting or specimen drawing that you create, but you must include information on the subject you are drawing, and if your observation is from a microscope, you must include the model and magnification.
- Entrants should keep hold of their original drawings as these may be requested at a later date.
