About Us
Chennai Mathematical Institute is a centre of excellence for teaching and research in the Mathematical Sciences. It was founded in 1989 as a part of the SPIC Science Foundation, funded by the SPIC group in Chennai. Since 1996, it has been an autonomous institution. CMI moved into its new campus on five acres of land at the SIPCOT Information Technology Park in Siruseri in October, 2005. The campus is located along the Old Mahabalipuram Road, which is fast developing as the IT corridor to the south of the city in Chennai.
The main areas of research at CMI are Mathematics, Physics & Computer Science.

Eligibility Criteria

The candidate must have passed 12th class with Mathematics (Mandatory).

The candidate can be from any stream.

Students with exceptionally good performance in the National Olympiads in Mathematics, Physics and Informatics are exempted from writing the BSc entrance examination.
NOTE - There is a common entrance examination for both the B.Sc. (Hons.) programmes. You need not select your course at the time of applying. The choice can be made after admission.
About the Exam
Candidates are supposed to appear for Chennai Mathematical Institute's - own entrance exam i.e “CMI Test 2025” for admission into the Undergraduate courses. Candidates are supposed to fulfill the eligibility criteria to be able to appear for the entrance exam.
Exam Pattern

The test will be mostly based on mathematics that is normally covered up to 12th standard in the NCERT syllabus for mathematics. More specifically this includes relations and functions, algebra, calculus, coordinate geometry, vectors and matrices (up to 3 dimensions), counting, probability and all topics covered until 10th standard including in particular Euclidean geometry and basic number theory.

Direct admission to BSc through Olympiads
Students with exceptionally good performance in the National Olympiads in Mathematics and Physics conducted by HBSCE and the Indian Computing Olympiad conducted by IARCS are exempted from writing the BSc entrance examination.
Typically, the following categories of students qualify for direct admission:

Students who have qualified for the International Mathematical Olympiad Training Camp (IMOTC) or European Girls Mathematical Olympiad Training Camp (EGMOOTC) in Class 11 or Class 12.

Students who have qualified for the Orientation Cum Selection Camp (OCSC) in Physics in Class 11 or Class 12.

Students who have qualified for the International Olympiad in Informatics Training Camp (IOITC), or have received a gold or silver medal at the Indian National Olympiad in Informatics (INOI) in Class 11 or Class 12.
NOTE - To apply for admission through this route, please fill out the CMI application form in full detail and pay the application fee. After you fill out the form, please send an email to admissions@cmi.ac.in with your CMI application details and the category through which you qualify for direct admission. You will then receive a confirmation by email if you are exempted from writing the entrance exam.

NOTE - You need not choose between BSc (Hons) Mathematics and Computer Science and BSc (Hons) Mathematics and Physics at the time of applying. The choice can be made after admission.
Fees and scholarships
The tuition fee is Rs 1,25,000/- per semester (two semesters in a year). A substantial number of scholarships will be available, consisting of a full waiver of the tuition fees and a monthly fellowship of Rs. 5,000. Currently, the number of scholarships awarded is roughly 35 per year. Decisions on the award of scholarships will be made at the time of admission, based on prevailing eligibility criteria. The continuation of scholarships will be reviewed every semester and will depend on satisfactory academic performance.
Students who stay in the hostel pay hostel and mess fees at the at the beginning of each semester. Currently, the amount payable is Rs 31,000 per semester, (Rs 4,000, Rs 23,000 and Rs 4,000 towards hostel fees, mess charges and establishment charges respectively). These charges are adjusted periodically to account for inflation.
